Overview
DSL Technology supplies
the necessary bandwidth for applications such as high-speed access to
the Internet, Dedicated Internet Connectivity, Remote Local Area Network
(LAN) access, and Virtual Private Networks (VPN). DSL is a broadband digital
connection made directly to your premises using existing copper telephone
lines. A DSL modem maintains a digital link from your home or business
to our network. This modem can drive ordinary telephone lines at speeds
far beyond conventional dial-up modems. The modem plugs into your existing
local area network or can be attached directly to a PC through an installed
network card.

Configurations
There are several common
ways to configure your
home or office network to access the Internet over DSL. Prairie Grove
Telephone Co. distributes up to 2 Dynamic IP addresses for each standard
DSL account. Therefore, only two computers can directly connect to the
Internet at the same time. However, if a customer would like to access
the Internet on more than two computers, he/she may purchase a third party
router that is capable of doing Network Address Translations (NAT). Such
a router will allow the customer to overcome the 2-computer limit and
connect up to 253 computers on the same DSL Line. For information on such
a device please refer to the section 6 of this guide titled "Internet
Sharing Devices".
Outlined below are
three of the more common network configurations that can be used to incorporate
DSL into your local area network. You will need to choose one of these
configurations based on the number of computers you want to access the
Internet on a single DSL connection.

Responsibilities
of the Customer: |
 |
It
is the responsibility of the customer to connect the DSL modem to
his or her network or computer(s). Our Installation manual provides
detailed step-by-step instructions for configuring your computer(s)
to use DSL as your primary Internet Connection. The installation manual
will assume that you have a network card properly installed in your
computer. |
| |
Responsibilities
of Prairie Grove Telephone Company: |
| |
When the installer comes to your home or business, he will install
any necessary wiring between the outside protector and the DSL modem
itself. A special DSL Surge Suppressor will be used to protect both
the line and the modem from any power surges that may occur. Once
the installer has the modem physically installed, he will test the
connection with a laptop computer to make sure everything is working
properly. |
